manual lymphatic drainage

MLD has many benefits, including:

Relaxation - balancing the nervous system

Pain Reduction - using gentle, rhythmical hand movements to reduce pain signals sent to the brain

Tissue Drainage - accelerating lymph flow

Immune Response - helping to render detrimental substances harmless

Scar Tissue Reduction - speeding up wound healing time

Lymphoedema Support - removing protein from the tissues

Prevention - supporting and enhancing the action of the immune system

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, highly specialised, non-invasive technique designed to move fluid from the tissues. Helen Bell employs precise and complex pumping, circular and spiralling movements directly onto the skin.

In the early 1930s, Dr Emil Vodder created his unique range of movements, bringing relief to sufferers of many chronic conditions. Since Vodder's pioneering work, MLD has spread worldwide, becoming a popular treatment in many European hospitals and clinics. Along with Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy, it is now recognised in the UK as an effective method for the treatment and control of lymphoedema.

Whilst MLD is a very gentle therapy, it can have profound effects on the body: it may therefore not be suitable for those suffering from heart and blood circulatory problems, or untreated cancer. Where necessary, Helen works closely with the client's GP and Consultant.

MLD has a wide range of applications including, but not limited to:

Amputation, Burns, Anxiety, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Pain, Concussion, 'Detoxing', Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Keloid Scars, Lipoedema, Lymphoedema, Mastectomy, Oedema (swelling), Parkinson's Disease, Phantom Pain, Pregnancy, Relaxation, Reconstructive Surgery, Scars, Scleroderma, Stress, Venous Insufficiency, Whiplash.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a medically recognised therapy for the treatment of lymphoedema, when used alongside Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy.
