decongestive lymphatic therapy
In the European healthcare systems, DLT has been the treatment of choice for lymphoedema (protein-rich oedema) for many years. However, the UK health system has only recently begun to appreciate the effects that DLT can have on the successful management of the condition.
The cornerstone therapies of Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy are:
manual lymphatic drainage
compression therapy
exercise therapy

Provision of DLT varies across the UK, and financial and time constraints mean that many lymphoedema clinics within the NHS offer only compression hosiery, rather than a full treatment programme.
As a result, many patients seek care with private MLD therapists, who are able to offer MLD, compression therapy and other lymphoedema treatments within a relaxed, unhurried environment and at times and to a timescale that is convenient and appropriate for the client, even offering up to twice daily treatments where required.
