The Bowen Technique – a healing, life-changing, hands-on therapy – is revolutionising the healthcare world and Helen is delighted to introduce it to Tetbury.

A simple and powerful technique, the Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen and is so gentle that it can be used on anyone from newborn infants to the elderly, helping to relieve many kinds of discomfort. It offers rapid, long-lasting relief of symptoms and is becoming especially well known for its effectiveness with back and neck pain, frozen shoulder, asthma, migraines and infant colic. Many conditions respond within three treatments.

The Bowen Technique is not a form of massage, acupressure or osteopathy, and there is no manipulation, adjustment or force used. Instead, Helen Bell uses thumbs and fingers to gently move fascia, muscle, ligament and tendons in varying parts of the body, leaving the room after each set of moves.

These moments of stillness following the sets of moves are unique to Bowen, and play an important role in the technique. They allow the nervous system time to respond to the movements that have ‘challenged’ the muscle, tendon, fascia etc, and enable the body to embark on the process of repair.

The initial treatment addresses the whole body. As a general rule, moves during that first treatment will be made over the back and legs, and then the upper back and shoulders, before finishing with the neck.

A session generally lasts from 45 minutes to one hour and treatments should be scheduled between five and seven days apart. It is recommended that a set of three sessions be booked in advance to ensure the correct spacing between sessions and to allow the practitioner sufficient time to establish a client’s response to Bowen. It should be noted that there are some guidelines that must be followed whilst a course of treatment is undertaken: Helen discusses these before bookings are made.

For optimum health to be sustained, it’s recommended that clients return to Helen for regular treatments every six to eight weeks.
